Claude can now look inside your bank account. Anthropic launched Personal Finance in Claude on November 5, a beta that lets you link your bank and card accounts and ask questions about your own money in plain words, from “Where did my money go this month?” to “Can I afford a trip this spring?” Access is read-only: Claude can’t move, manage or invest a cent.

It is rolling out gradually this week to paying subscribers in the US, and Anthropic is leaning hard on one promise: no ads, no sponsored tips and no credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own to sell you.

What Claude can see in your accounts

Accounts are linked through Plaid, the service many finance apps use to connect to banks. You sign in to your bank inside Plaid, so Claude never asks for or sees your password. According to Anthropic’s Help Center page, for each account you choose to share Claude reads:

  • The basics: the bank’s name, each account’s name, type and last four digits.
  • Money: balances and credit limits, which can be a day or two old.
  • History: up to 24 months of transactions, with amount, date, merchant, category and the bank’s description.

You can link up to 16 banks, including credit card, loan and investment accounts, but for investments, loans and cards Claude reads only balances and limits, not holdings or trades. A Personal Finance page in the sidebar shows widgets for spending, cash flow, subscriptions and upcoming bills, and Claude can build charts, a calendar of what’s due or a dashboard you keep adjusting. Anthropic’s own example has Claude adding up a month’s spending of $4,309.37 (about £3,300 or €3,750), spotting a membership renewal and working out what’s left before payday.

Plaid says Anthropic is one of more than 800 AI companies building on its network. Its chief technology officer, Will Robinson, framed the launch this way:

Most people don’t need more financial information. They need help making sense of it.

No ads, no training, and a warning about mistakes

Conversations inside the Personal Finance hub aren’t used to train Anthropic’s models; anything you share in ordinary chats follows your usual privacy settings. Once Claude has used your accounts in a chat, it is designed not to save anything from it to memory and leaves it out of your monthly recap. Unlinking a bank stops Claude reading it, and you can also cut Claude off at Plaid’s own site, my.plaid.com.

There are caveats. Anthropic says the feature “isn’t designed to give investment advice” and warns that Claude can make mistakes, so it tells users to ask which transactions are behind a number and check important figures with their bank. The beta doesn’t work in Claude Duet, the proactive agent app Anthropic launched last month, nor in scheduled tasks, Cowork or Claude Code, and data exports don’t yet include your saved dashboard. The no-ads line is a pointed contrast with OpenAI, which is expanding ChatGPT ads to 89 countries.

Claude follows ChatGPT into your wallet

OpenAI got there first. In May it launched finance tools in ChatGPT for US Pro subscribers, also built on Plaid, The Next Web reported, with access to investment activity and liabilities as well as balances and transactions. Claude’s version reads less for now.

It also lands as banks grow wary of AI touching customer accounts. US lenders have said AI agents are slipping into accounts without their approval, and Canada’s RBC is locking AI agents out of online banking. A read-only link through Plaid, which banks already work with, sidesteps much of that fight.

Anthropic calls the launch “a first step.” For bigger money decisions, it says people are best served by Claude working alongside licensed professionals and regulated firms, and it is asking banks, wealth managers and financial services companies to help shape that.

Where Personal Finance works

Only in the US for now. The beta is on the Pro, Max and Ultra plans, on the web, Claude Desktop, iPhone and Android, and only US banks can be linked. It isn’t available on Free, Team or Enterprise plans. Readers in the UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, the EU and everywhere else won’t see it: Anthropic says the Personal Finance page doesn’t appear outside the US, even on a VPN, and it hasn’t given a date for other countries.

Why it matters

Money is one of the most personal things people ask chatbots about, and both big labs now want a direct, live view of your accounts. Anthropic is betting that “read-only, no ads, nothing to sell” is the pitch that wins trust, while OpenAI builds an ad business around ChatGPT.
