Hit your Claude usage limit mid-task? Anthropic has just given subscribers a get-out-of-jail-free card. A new Resets option on Claude’s usage page lets you wipe your usage limit on demand with a single “Reset for free” button, and you get to choose when to use it. But you only get one, and it expires on October 22.
What is a Reset?
Claude’s paid plans have two limits: a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit. When you max out your session, you normally have to wait until it resets on its own. A Reset lets you skip that wait.
What makes this one different is that it’s banked. Rather than Anthropic resetting everyone’s limits at once, the reset is saved to your account so you can spend it whenever you actually need it: in the middle of a deadline, a big coding session, or when you’ve burned through your allowance testing a new model.
Anthropic is pitching it as a way to try out its new model: the reset invites users to “explore Opus 5.5,” according to TestingCatalog.
Who gets it
The reset arrived alongside Claude Opus 5.5 on Monday. MacRumors reports that subscribers received a one-time rate limit reset that can be used any time up to October 22. According to TestingCatalog, which spotted the button going live on Monday evening, it’s appearing for Pro, Max and Team users.
Anthropic is also raising five-hour session limits by 20% on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans. Because Opus 5.5 is cheaper to run, Anthropic says those limits stretch around 25% further overall, The Decoder reports.
How to use your Reset
- Open Claude on the web at claude.ai or in the Claude desktop app.
- Go to Settings › Usage.
- Find the Resets section below your usage bars.
- Click Reset for free.
The option is showing up on the web and desktop apps first, and is still rolling out to Claude’s mobile apps.
When to use it
Since you only get one, timing matters. There’s no point using it when you’ve still got plenty of allowance left. Save it for when your current session is maxed out and you can’t wait for the timer, and use it before October 22, or it’s gone.
Why Anthropic is doing this
Usage limits have been one of Claude subscribers’ biggest complaints, and OpenAI launched its half-price GPT-6 Sol and Luna just 90 minutes after Opus 5.5 arrived. Higher limits and a free reset are an easy way to get people trying the new model, and to stop them wandering off to a rival when they hit a wall.
