If Anthropic suspends your Claude account, sign in at claude.ai with that account: the restricted account screen you land on holds the appeal form and, on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans, the options to export your data or delete the account. A refund is a separate request through Claude’s support messenger, and under Anthropic’s terms you won’t get one if it decides you broke the rules. Here is how each step works, why an export from a banned account can come back almost empty, and what to do if you can’t sign in at all.
Why was my Claude account suspended?
Anthropic’s appeals page gives three reasons it may ban an account: repeated violations of its Usage Policy, creating an account from an unsupported location, and breaking its Terms of Service. Its Consumer Terms add several rules that catch people out without them meaning any harm:
- Sharing: you may not share your login or “make your Account available to anyone else”, so one paid account used by a whole team breaks the terms.
- Automation: using Claude “through automated or non-human means, whether through a bot, script, or otherwise” is banned unless you are using an API key or Anthropic explicitly allows it.
- Location: the Supported Regions Policy covers use “while physically located in an unsupported region”, which includes travelling and using a VPN to look as if you are somewhere else.
- Age: Claude is for adults only, and accounts that look like a child’s are disabled until the owner proves their age (see below).
Suspensions are common. Anthropic’s Transparency Hub says it banned 11.4 million accounts from January to June 2026, received 398,000 appeals and overturned 42,000 of them, roughly one appeal in ten. A rewritten Usage Policy takes effect on November 12, 2026.
Anthropic also sends warnings when it believes your prompts break the Usage Policy. If you think a warning is a mistake, it asks you to email [email protected] with the details and your account information.
How to appeal a Claude account suspension
- Go to claude.ai and sign in with the suspended account, using the same email or Google login as before. Anthropic says you must be logged in to reach the appeal form.
- You land on the restricted account screen (
claude.ai/restricted). Choose the appeal option. - Explain what you use Claude for and why you think the ban is wrong. Mention anything that could have looked unusual: travel, a VPN, a shared computer, or a script or tool connected to the account.
- Wait for the Safeguards team. Anthropic says it “can further investigate why your account was disabled”, so the appeal is also how you find out the reason.
Anthropic doesn’t publish a deadline for answers, and its appeals page says response times are “currently longer than normal”. Support is in writing only: its support guide says there is no phone line, and that opening a second request for the same problem “usually slows the answer down”. Reply in your existing conversation instead.
Can I get my chats back from a banned Claude account?
Usually, but not always in full. Anthropic says banned users on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans can still sign in at claude.ai to export their data or delete the account without contacting it, using options on the same screen as the appeal form. The catch is one sentence: “the data you’re able to access and export may be restricted depending upon the Usage Policy violation associated with your account.” An export that holds only your name, email address and phone number is possible under that rule.
A normal export, according to Anthropic’s export guide, includes your chats, projects, memory and account data, but not the original files you uploaded or a Personal Finance dashboard. Other things to know:
- Exports run only from the website or Claude Desktop, not the iPhone or Android apps.
- The download link arrives by email, expires after 24 hours and may work only once, so download it straight away.
- If the link was emailed because your account was closed, you can’t run the export again. Anthropic says to contact support quickly, because once the account’s data is deleted the export can’t be sent again.
- The terms say that when access ends, Anthropic “may at our option delete any Materials or other data associated with your Account”.
- An export can’t be imported into another personal Claude account.
If your export came back nearly empty, say so in your appeal and in a support message. In the UK, the EU and other places with data protection laws you also have a legal right to ask for a copy of your personal data; Anthropic’s Privacy Center explains how to make that request.
Will I get a refund if Claude bans my account?
Not if Anthropic says you broke its terms. The Consumer Terms say: “If we terminate your access to the Services due to a violation of these Terms and you have a Subscription, you will not be entitled to any refund.” If Anthropic ends a subscription “for any other reason” and you paid on its website, it promises a pro rata refund for the time left. Its refund page adds that payments are otherwise non-refundable except where the terms or the law say so, or in cases of fraud. Where you paid decides where you ask:
| Where you paid | How to ask | What the rules say |
|---|---|---|
| claude.ai or Claude Desktop | Your name, then Get help, Send us a message, Accept, then “Claude Refund Request” | Only where the terms or law allow, or fraud |
| UK and EEA | Same route, or Settings | Refund within 14 days of purchase, reduced by what you used |
| Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan | Cancel in the customer portal or email [email protected] | 7-day right to cancel, with all payments for that subscription repaid |
| iPhone or iPad (App Store) | reportaproblem.apple.com | Apple decides; Anthropic can’t refund App Store charges |
| Android (Google Play) | Contact Anthropic support with your Google Play email or GPA order number | Support checks eligibility |
Usage credits you bought are non-refundable, and monthly API credits claimed on a Max, Ultra or Team plan stop when the plan is refunded (credits already in your account stay usable until they expire). Think twice before a bank chargeback: Anthropic says its support team can’t process refunds while a dispute is pending.
If you are not appealing, ask support to confirm your subscription is cancelled so it doesn’t renew.
Can’t log in to your suspended Claude account?
Open the message icon in the lower right corner of the Claude Help Center, start a conversation and choose “I can’t login”. Anthropic says it can still help with account deletion, data exports and subscription support, including cancelling a plan and checking refund eligibility, once it has checked details of your account and the payment method you used. If you have lost access to the email address itself, contact support from another address and copy in the one tied to the account.
Claude account suspended for being under 18, or failed ID check
You must be 18 or over to use Claude. Anthropic’s age assurance page says it disables accounts “based on indicators of minor activity”, and that the notification email contains a link to verify your age with Yoti, an outside provider. You can use a selfie for facial age estimation, a photo of a passport, driving licence or national ID card, or the Yoti Digital ID app. Pass, and the account is reinstated. Anthropic says it receives only a pass or fail result, and Yoti deletes the images once your age is checked.
If the iPhone or Android app blocks you instead, Anthropic says your app store has flagged you as under 18, under new age laws in some US states. Anthropic can’t change that: contact Apple or Google, or the parent who manages a Family Sharing or Family Link account.
Some users are asked for identity verification through Persona, with a physical government photo ID and a live selfie. You get several attempts; after that, Anthropic points you to its help form. If you are banned after verifying, the appeal form above still applies.
“Organization on hold”: when your account is fine but your team isn’t
If your own account is in good standing but a Team or Enterprise organization you belong to has been paused “because of unusual activity”, the restricted account screen lists each organization on hold. Click “Request a review” next to it to ask the Safeguards team to look again. On Team plans, members who aren’t owners can’t reach human support directly, so an owner may need to chase it. For Claude Code’s version of these errors, see our guide to “Your organization has disabled Claude subscription access”.
What not to do after a Claude ban
- Don’t open a new account. The Usage Policy bans getting around a ban “through the use of a different account, such as the creation of a new account, use of an existing account”, or by giving access to someone who was banned.
- Don’t switch on a VPN to try again from another country.
- Don’t start with a chargeback: it blocks a refund while the dispute runs.
- Don’t send the same request several times. Duplicates go back to the end of the queue.
- Back up while you still can. If Claude holds work you can’t afford to lose, run an export from Settings, then Privacy, every so often, and keep your original files elsewhere, since exports leave them out.
Claude account suspended in the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia or India
The appeal, export and support steps are the same in every country where Claude is offered, including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and the rest of the EU, Australia and India. Claude isn’t offered in mainland China, Hong Kong, Russia or Iran, so accounts used from there break the regional rules. Refund rights are where countries differ: the UK and the EEA get the 14-day refund, and Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Taiwan the 7-day cancellation right. EU users can also contact Anthropic’s single point of contact under the Digital Services Act, UK users can report a concern under the Online Safety Act, and Australian users can raise one under the eSafety Commissioner’s industry standard; all three are linked from Anthropic’s support guide.
Last checked: November 7, 2026, against Anthropic’s safeguards and appeals, export, refund, support, age assurance and identity verification help pages, its Consumer Terms (effective October 8, 2025), Usage Policy and Supported Regions Policy (both effective November 12, 2026) and its Transparency Hub.
Frequently asked questions
Why was my Claude account suspended for no reason?
Anthropic doesn’t always say why on the ban screen. Its listed reasons are repeated Usage Policy violations, signing up from an unsupported location and breaking its terms, which include sharing an account, automated access without an API key, a VPN, or signs that the user is under 18. Appeal while logged in and the Safeguards team can look into why it was disabled.
How do I appeal a Claude account suspension?
Sign in at claude.ai with the suspended account and use the appeal form on the restricted account screen. You must be logged in to see it. Explain what you use Claude for and why you think the ban is wrong.
How long does a Claude appeal take?
Anthropic doesn’t give a time. Its appeals page says response times are currently longer than normal. Reply in your existing conversation rather than opening a new one, which can slow things down.
Can I get a refund if my Claude account is banned?
Not if Anthropic ends your access for breaking its terms: the Consumer Terms say you are then not entitled to a refund. If it ends a subscription for another reason and you paid on its website, it refunds the remaining time pro rata. UK and EEA users can get a refund within 14 days of purchase, and App Store refunds go through Apple.
Can I export my chats from a suspended Claude account?
Yes, on Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans you can still sign in at claude.ai and export your data from the same screen as the appeal form. Anthropic says what you can export may be restricted depending on the violation.
Why is my Claude data export empty?
Anthropic says the data a banned user can export may be restricted depending on the Usage Policy violation, so an export can hold only account details. Exports also never include the original files you uploaded. Raise it in your appeal and with support.
My Claude account was suspended because I might be under 18. What do I do?
Use the Yoti link in Anthropic’s email to prove you are 18 or over, with a selfie, an ID photo or the Yoti app. If you pass, the account is reinstated. If the mobile app blocks you, your app store has flagged your age, so contact Apple or Google.
Can I make a new Claude account after a ban?
No. Anthropic’s Usage Policy bans getting around a ban with a different account, whether new or existing. Appeal the original ban instead.
Is there a phone number for Claude support?
No. Anthropic offers support in writing only, through the support messenger and email. If you can’t log in, open the messenger on the Claude Help Center and choose “I can’t login”.
