Codex usage limits reset on their own every five hours and every week, but OpenAI also keeps wiping everyone’s limits early, sometimes with a few hours’ notice and sometimes with none. Those surprise resets are announced by Tibo Sottiaux, who runs Codex and ChatGPT Work at OpenAI, on his X account, and since October 5 he has promised either a clear improvement or a full reset every day for 28 days. Here is how Codex resets work, how to tell when one is coming, every global reset so far, and how to use a banked reset.

Will Codex reset today?

Nobody outside OpenAI knows in advance, and OpenAI says “future resets are not guaranteed”. The only reliable signal is Sottiaux’s own feed: he usually posts a heads-up first (“Global reset by EOD”, “Global reset landing tomorrow 10am PST”) and then a confirmation once it has reached every account (“All propagated”).

During the 28-day challenge, which runs to about November 1, a reset is possible on any day the team doesn’t ship an improvement it is happy with. Three of the first six days ended with one.

A crop of unofficial “will Codex reset” trackers and countdown sites has sprung up to watch his posts and guess at the odds. They are run by fans, not OpenAI, and their forecasts are guesses based on past timing. To see whether a reset has actually reached you, check your own usage page (below).

How Codex usage limits reset normally

Codex and ChatGPT Work share one allowance: OpenAI’s Codex pricing page says Work “uses the same pricing, credits, and usage limits as Codex”, so a reset covers both. There are two windows:

  • Five-hour window: on Plus and Business, your allowance refills five hours after you start using it. OpenAI says Pro plans “currently have no five-hour limit”.
  • Weekly limit: a larger cap that refills once a week, on a date shown in your usage settings.

OpenAI gives rough figures for how many local messages fit in each five-hour window, not fixed limits, because model, context, reasoning and tool use all change the cost:

ModelPlus and Standard Business, per 5 hours
GPT-6 Astra5 to 45 messages
GPT-6.1 Sol15 to 160 messages
GPT-6 Sol15 to 150 messages
GPT-6 Luna350 to 3,000 messages

Speed settings eat into it faster: Fast mode uses your included usage at 2.5 times the normal rate, and Ultrafast on GPT-6 Astra or GPT-6.1 Sol at 8 times.

To check when your limit resets: open Settings › Usage in ChatGPT or the Codex app, go to chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage, or type /status in the Codex CLI. OpenAI’s help centre is blunt about asking for one: “Support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits.”

Tibo’s 28-day challenge: an improvement or a reset, every day

On October 4, Sottiaux said his team was “locking in” on simplifications, efficiency and new models, then set himself a public dare:

Day 1 was October 5, so Day 28 falls on about November 1. The first six days, from his posts:

DayWhat shippedReset?
1 (Oct 5)Default speed about 50% faster for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 SolNo
2 (Oct 6)Auto-review made free, API changes, meeting notes, Decisions APIYes, after a community vote
3 (Oct 7)GPT-6 in ChatGPT for everyoneYes, a banked reset
4 (Oct 8)Instant steering and GPT-6.1 Sol ultrafastNo
5 (Oct 9)Composer predictions for Pro in the desktop appNo
6 (Oct 10)A resetYes, global

Day 2 shows how the rules work in practice. The team shipped four things, but users still voted for a reset, and Sottiaux gave in: “I did calibrate it and it *seems* that the game is rigged in reset’s favor, but such are the rules at the moment.” Day 3 came with the launch of GPT-6 in ChatGPT and a banked reset to mark 40 million active users across Codex and ChatGPT Work.

Every global Codex reset so far

These are the resets Sottiaux announced on X since mid-July, dated by when he confirmed them (UTC). Together that is at least ten in under three months, roughly one a week:

Date (UTC)Why
July 18“Oops... I did it again”: thanks to the team as usage grew
July 25After an “almost global outage” the night before
August 31Celebrating 25 million active users
September 8So users could keep using GPT-6 Astra for the working week
September 12Alongside fixes for Astra quality problems
September 26After a brief service disruption
October 2Apology for a slow start with GPT-6.1 Sol after DevDay
October 7Day 2 of the 28-day challenge, by community vote
October 7 to 8Banked reset for 40 million active users (Day 3)
October 11Day 6 of the 28-day challenge

The pattern is fairly clear: outages, usage milestones and rocky model launches (such as the GPT-6.1 Sol release at DevDay) tend to be followed by a reset. A global reset refills your windows rather than adding to them, so if you had most of your allowance left, you gain little.

What is a banked Codex reset, and how do I use it?

A banked reset is a one-time reset saved to your account for you to use when you choose, rather than applied to everyone at once. OpenAI’s help article says it is “not purchased credit and does not permanently increase your plan’s usage limit”. To use one:

  1. Open Settings › Usage in the desktop app, the CLI or on the web.
  2. Select the usage summary showing a reset, such as “1 reset available” or “Full reset”.
  3. Check the expiry, then confirm.

You may also be offered it when you hit a Codex limit. Two things are worth knowing before you press it:

  • It moves your weekly reset date. A full banked reset refreshes both the five-hour and weekly windows and starts a new week. OpenAI’s example: if your week was due to reset on Friday and you use it on Tuesday, your next weekly reset is around the following Tuesday, and you don’t also get Friday’s.
  • It isn’t wasted if there is nothing to reset. It is only used up if it refreshes at least one window. Once it expires, OpenAI says it “cannot be restored or reissued”.

So if your weekly limit is due back within a day or so, it usually pays to hold the banked reset for a heavier week. Anthropic gave Claude subscribers a similar one-off reset in September.

Who gets a Codex reset? Plans and countries

Global resets so far have been announced for paid accounts: “all paid users across codex and ChatGPT work” or “all paid ChatGPT accounts”, which covers Plus, the Pro tiers, Business, Enterprise and Edu. Free and Go haven’t been named. For banked resets, OpenAI says eligibility “varies by offer, plan, workspace, and region”.

The resets aren’t regional: they reach paid accounts wherever Codex is available, including the US, UK, Canada, Germany and the rest of the EU, Australia and India. Sottiaux gives times in US Pacific time, so his “10am PST” in October means 17:00 UTC, 18:00 in London, 19:00 in Berlin, 22:30 in India and 04:00 the next morning in Sydney. A reset can take a few hours to reach every account.

Hit your Codex limit? What you can do now

  • Switch model: GPT-6 Luna stretches a five-hour window far further than Astra or Sol.
  • Turn off Fast or Ultrafast: they use your allowance 2.5 to 8 times faster.
  • Buy credits: Plus and Pro users can add ChatGPT credits to keep working without upgrading.
  • Use an API key: local Codex chats can run on an API key at standard API rates.
  • Finish what you started: OpenAI says if you hit a limit mid-turn, Codex can finish that turn, subject to fair use.

Frequently asked questions

Will Codex reset today?

Only OpenAI knows. Surprise resets are announced by Tibo Sottiaux, who runs Codex and ChatGPT Work, on his X account (@thsottiaux), usually a few hours ahead. Until about November 1, his 28-day challenge promises either a clear improvement or a full reset every day.

When does Codex usage reset?

On Plus and Business, the allowance refills five hours after you start using it, and a larger weekly limit refills once a week. Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Check the exact times in Settings › Usage, at chatgpt.com/codex/settings/usage, or with /status in the Codex CLI.

What is Tibo’s 28-day Codex challenge?

On October 4, 2026, Tibo Sottiaux promised that for 28 days OpenAI would ship either one clear improvement for most Codex and ChatGPT Work users or a full reset every day. Day 1 was October 5, so it runs to about November 1. Resets landed on Days 2, 3 (banked) and 6.

What is a banked reset in Codex?

A one-time reset saved to your account that you apply when you choose, from Settings › Usage (“1 reset available” or “Full reset”). It is not credit, doesn’t raise your limit permanently and can’t be restored once it expires.

Does a banked reset change my weekly reset date?

Yes. A full banked reset refreshes both the five-hour and weekly windows and starts a new week from when you use it, so you lose the weekly reset you were due. If your weekly limit is about to refill anyway, it is usually better to save it.

Can OpenAI support reset my Codex limit?

No. OpenAI’s help centre says “Support cannot reset ChatGPT or Codex limits” and doesn’t give courtesy resets. It can investigate if usage was counted wrongly or a reset you were eligible for didn’t arrive.

Does a Codex reset also reset ChatGPT Work?

Yes. Codex and ChatGPT Work share the same usage allowance, and the global resets so far have covered both.

Do Free and Go users get Codex resets?

The global resets so far have been announced for paid accounts (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu). Free and Go haven’t been named, and OpenAI says banked reset eligibility varies by offer, plan, workspace and region.
