Claude Fable 5.5 is not out yet: as of October 16, 2026, Anthropic hasn’t announced it, given it a price or published a model card, and its models overview still lists Claude Fable 5.1 as its most capable public model. The name has been doing the rounds on X since September, and on October 13 an identifier, claude-fable-5-5, briefly turned up in a price file built from Microsoft Azure’s model catalogue. Here is what is confirmed, what is rumour, when the next Fable could realistically arrive and how you will know.

Last checked: October 16, 2026, against Anthropic’s models overview, API release notes and Claude app release notes.

Is Fable 5.5 out yet?

No. Anthropic’s API release notes record every model launch, and the last Fable entry is from September 1, 2026: “We’ve launched Claude Fable 5.1 (claude-fable-5-1), the successor to Claude Fable 5.” The Claude app release notes say the same. Every model Anthropic has released since then belongs to the cheaper 5.5 family:

ModelReleasedAPI price (input / output per million tokens)
Claude Fable 5June 9, 2026$10 / $50
Claude Fable 5.1September 1, 2026$10 / $50
Claude Opus 5.5September 22, 2026$4 / $20
Claude Sonnet 5.5September 28, 2026$2 / $10
Claude Haiku 5.5October 7, 2026$0.10 / $0.50

When Anthropic launched Opus 5.5, it called it “the first model in our new Claude 5.5 family” and said “Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5 will follow in the coming weeks.” Both did. Fable wasn’t on that list, and Anthropic hasn’t said anything about a Fable 5.5 since. It also hasn’t ruled one out. Opus 5.5 was pitched as performing “at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work” for 40% less than Opus 5, which is why it took over as Anthropic’s recommended default (here’s how its first users took it).

Fable 5.5 on Azure: the catalogue listing

The strongest sign so far came on October 13. At 12:09 UTC an automatic price-sync bot for LiteLLM, an open-source tool developers use to call many AI models through one interface, opened a change that added a model called azure_ai/claude-fable-5-5. Its source line pointed to Azure’s management API listing models in the East US 2 region, which only Azure customers can read. An X user posted it at 13:33 UTC, saying Fable 5.5 had appeared in Azure’s catalogue “with GenerallyAvailable status”, and the post passed 300,000 views.

Two things count against reading too much into it. First, every detail in the entry itself matched Fable 5.1: $10 and $50 per million input and output tokens, $0.25 cache reads, a 1 million token context window, 128,000 output tokens and the same December 5, 2027 retirement date. That looks like a placeholder copied from the current model, not real specifications. Second, when we checked on October 16, LiteLLM’s current price file no longer listed claude-fable-5-5 at all, while its Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 entries were still there. Anthropic’s Claude in Microsoft Foundry documentation doesn’t list it, and neither Microsoft nor Anthropic has commented.

Cloud providers often set up a model’s plumbing before launch day, so an entry like this can mean a release is being prepared. It can’t tell you the date, the price or even the final name.

Fable 5.5 release date: when will it come out?

There is no official Fable 5.5 release date. What we do have is Anthropic’s own track record and a few things that could slow it down:

  • Cadence: Fable 5.1 arrived 84 days after Fable 5. The same gap from September 1 would land around late November 2026. The 5.5 family has moved faster: Opus, Sonnet and Haiku 5.5 all shipped within 15 days.
  • Pacing: Anthropic described Opus 5.5 as “our first release since we called for pacing the frontier”, a call for leading labs to slow down on the most capable systems. A new Fable would be the first frontier release since then, and Anthropic may take longer over its safety testing.
  • Government review: Fable 5 was switched off worldwide in June after a Commerce Department order restricting it, until the controls were lifted on June 30 (our analysis covers what happened). The most capable models get the most scrutiny, which can affect timing.

The name isn’t certain either. Anthropic has never called anything Fable 5.5; the name comes from the community, by analogy with the other 5.5 models. Some early posts called the rumoured model “Fable 5.2”.

Fable 5.5 Polymarket odds

Traders expect a new Fable soon. On Polymarket’s “Next Fable Model (5.2+) released by...?” market, prices on the morning of October 16, 2026 implied:

New Fable model released byImplied chance
October 17, 2026About 5%
October 24, 2026About 82%
October 31, 2026About 87%
December 31, 2026About 99%

The market counts any Fable numbered 5.2 or higher, so it would pay out on a Fable 5.5. These are bets, not information from Anthropic, and the odds move by the hour; a separate market gave about a two in three chance that the next Fable launches at $50 or more per million output tokens, the same as Fable 5.1.

Fable 5.5 rumours: what has been claimed

Most of what you will read about Fable 5.5 on Reddit and X traces back to a handful of posts, none from Anthropic:

  • September 10: a widely shared post claimed Fable 5.5 “could launch in late September or early October” and would be the first fresh pretraining run for the Fable class. It named no source, and that window has passed.
  • September 18 and October 1: users claimed Claude was quietly routing some Fable 5.1 chats to a newer model, judged by better answers to test prompts. Their screenshots still showed Fable 5.1. Anthropic’s model ID documentation says dateless IDs “are pinned snapshots”, which argues against a silent swap on the API.
  • October 1: another post said Fable 5.5 was “expected to release next week”, adding “I’m hearing of a Tuesday release”. Tuesday, October 6 came and went without one.

Treat claims about Fable 5.5’s benchmark scores, price or abilities as guesses until Anthropic publishes them.

Claude Fable 5.1 vs Fable 5.5

There is nothing official to compare yet. Fable 5.1 is the model you can use today: Anthropic says it is built for “long-running agentic coding, knowledge work, and research”, with a 1 million token context window, 128,000 output tokens and always-on adaptive thinking. Anthropic hasn’t published any benchmark, price or feature for a Fable 5.5. If it follows the other 5.5 models, the pattern so far has been similar or better performance for less money: Opus 5.5 costs 40% less to run than Opus 5, and Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 both came in cheaper than the models they replaced.

How to tell if you have Fable 5.5

You will know, because Anthropic announces every new model on its newsroom, its API release notes and the Claude app release notes, usually with a new model ID on launch day. If Fable 5.5 follows the pattern of the others, that ID would be claude-fable-5-5.

  • Claude apps: open the model picker. Today it shows Fable 5.1 for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise users; a new Fable would appear there with its name.
  • Claude Code: the fable alias “uses the Fable model for your provider”, and Anthropic’s model configuration docs say it resolves to Fable 5.1 unless you set ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_FABLE_MODEL. Run /model to see which version you are on.
  • API: call GET /v1/models. Since October 1 it returns a line field for each model, so you can list everything in the Fable line without parsing names.

Asking Claude “are you Fable 5.5?” doesn’t work: models often don’t know their own version name, which is how some of the routing rumours started.

Where you can use Claude Fable now

Until a new model arrives, Fable 5.1 is the one to use for the hardest work. Anthropic’s Fable page says it is available to Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers, on the Claude API at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, and through Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. It isn’t on the free plan.

Claude is sold in Anthropic’s supported countries, which include the US, UK, Canada, Germany and the rest of the EU, Australia, India and Japan, but not China or Russia. Expect a new Fable to reach the same places on day one unless Anthropic or a government says otherwise. If you use Claude through GitHub Copilot or Cursor, Fable models usually need a higher plan, and our guide to missing Claude models explains why. For most work Anthropic itself recommends Sonnet 5.5 or Opus 5.5, which cost far less.

Claude Fable 5.5 FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Fable 5.5 out?

No. As of October 16, 2026, Anthropic has not announced Claude Fable 5.5. Claude Fable 5.1, released on September 1, 2026, is still its most capable public model.

When is the Claude Fable 5.5 release date?

There is no official release date. Fable 5.1 came 84 days after Fable 5, which would point to late November, but betting markets on October 16 expected a new Fable much sooner. Anthropic has said nothing about timing.

Was Fable 5.5 listed on Azure?

An entry called azure_ai/claude-fable-5-5 appeared in LiteLLM’s price file on October 13, 2026, sourced from Azure’s East US 2 model list. Its specifications were copied from Fable 5.1, and by October 16 it had been removed. Microsoft and Anthropic have not commented.

Will it be called Fable 5.5?

Not necessarily. The name comes from the community, by analogy with Opus, Sonnet and Haiku 5.5. Some early posts called the rumoured model Fable 5.2, and Anthropic has used neither name.

How much will Claude Fable 5.5 cost?

Anthropic has not published a price. Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 both cost $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens on the API, and Fable 5.1 is included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.

Is Claude secretly routing chats to Fable 5.5?

There is no evidence beyond user screenshots and test prompts, and those screenshots still show Fable 5.1. Anthropic’s documentation says API model IDs are pinned snapshots, and it announces new models publicly.

What are the Fable 5.5 Polymarket odds?

On the morning of October 16, 2026, Polymarket traders put the chance of a new Fable model (5.2 or higher) by October 24 at about 82%, and by the end of 2026 at about 99%. These are bets, not Anthropic information.

What is the difference between Claude Fable 5.1 and Fable 5.5?

Nobody outside Anthropic knows yet. Fable 5.1 is the current model, with a 1 million token context window and $10 and $50 API pricing. Anthropic has not published any details of a Fable 5.5.

Will Fable 5.5 be free?

Fable models have never been on Claude’s free plan. Fable 5.1 is for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise subscribers and API customers.

How will I know when Fable 5.5 is released?

Anthropic will announce it on its newsroom and in its API and Claude app release notes, and the new model will appear in the Claude model picker and in Claude Code’s /model menu.
