Is Claude available in your country? Where it works, where it doesn’t, and how to fix “not available”

Claude is available in 185 countries, regions and territories, including the US, Canada, the UK, every EU country, India, Japan, Australia and most of Latin America, Africa and the Middle East, according to Anthropic’s official supported countries list. It isn’t available in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Russia, Iran and a handful of other places. If you’re in a supported country and still see “not available”, the cause is usually a VPN, a phone number or your app store settings, and we explain the fixes below.

Which countries is Claude available in?

Anthropic keeps one list for Claude.ai (which covers the website and the Claude apps) and one for its commercial API, and today the two are identical: 185 entries. Here’s where the countries people most often ask about stand:

Where is Claude not available?

These places don’t appear on Anthropic’s list, so Claude.ai, the Claude apps and the API aren’t offered there:

• East Asia: mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and North Korea.
• Europe: Russia, Belarus, and the Crimea, Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions of Ukraine.
• Middle East and Asia: Iran, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan and Myanmar.
• Americas: Cuba and Venezuela.

Several of them are under US sanctions. Some small territories, such as Bermuda or the Cayman Islands, aren’t listed by name either.

Why is Claude not available in China and Hong Kong?

Anthropic’s terms “prohibit use of our services in certain regions due to legal, regulatory, and security risks,” it said when it tightened its rules in September 2025. It argued that companies under Chinese control can be legally compelled to “share data, cooperate with intelligence services, or take other actions that create national security risks.”

Since then, Anthropic has also refused companies that are more than 50% owned, directly or indirectly, by firms headquartered in unsupported regions, even if they operate from a supported country. So a Chinese-owned company’s office in Singapore can’t sign up either. Hong Kong and Macau are treated the same way as mainland China.

Why does Claude say it’s not available in my country when it is?

If your country is on the list but you see “not available in your country”, “unsupported location” or “not available in your region”, Claude is usually reading your location from something other than where you are. Work through these in order:

1. Turn off any VPN or proxy. If it routes your traffic through an unsupported country, Claude sees that country instead of yours.
2. Check your network. Some company, university and hotel networks send traffic abroad. Try mobile data to rule it out.
3. Check where you are. If you’re travelling in an unsupported country, such as mainland China, Claude won’t work until you leave, even with an account from home.
4. Use a supported phone number. Sign-up needs a mobile number from a supported country (see below).
5. Check your app store region. If the app says “not available in your country or region”, your Apple or Google account is probably set to another country. You can also use Claude in a web browser at claude.ai.
6. Contact support. If none of that works, Anthropic’s help centre is the place to report it, since IP addresses are occasionally mapped to the wrong country.

Can you use a VPN to access Claude?

Not within the rules. Anthropic’s help centre says: “Only users physically located in one of our supported locations can create and use Claude accounts.” Its consumer terms say you may only use Claude in line with its Supported Regions Policy. Plenty of sites sell VPNs as the fix, but using one to get around the region rules risks your account being suspended, along with your chats and anything you’ve paid for.

Phone verification: which numbers work?

Every new Claude account needs a mobile number that can receive a text. According to Anthropic’s phone verification page:

• The number must be from a supported location, and “there isn’t a way to skip this step.”
• VoIP numbers, Google Voice, app-generated numbers and landlines aren’t accepted.
• One number can verify up to three Claude accounts. If you see that it’s already in use, that limit has been reached.
• You can’t change the number once your account is verified.

You don’t need to be a US citizen. The rules are about where you are and where your number is from, not your nationality.

Claude apps: iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux

The Claude apps for iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows are offered in the same countries as Claude.ai. Claude Desktop for Linux is now in beta for Ubuntu and Debian (x64 and arm64), and chat works on every plan including Free, though Computer Use isn’t available on Linux yet. If an app store won’t show you Claude, check the country your store account is set to.

Is Claude Code or the API available in more countries?

No. Claude Code follows the same list as Claude.ai, and the commercial API list is currently the same 185 entries. If Claude Code tells you “Claude Code might not be available in your country. Check supported countries”, the causes and fixes are the same as above: a VPN, proxy or network routing you abroad is the usual culprit when you’re in a supported country.

Anthropic says it restricts regions “due to legal, regulatory, and security risks”, and since September 2025 it also refuses companies that are more than 50% owned by firms headquartered in places like China, wherever they operate.

Why does Claude say it’s not available in my country when it is?

The most common causes are a VPN or proxy making you look like you’re somewhere else, travelling in an unsupported country, a phone number from an unsupported country or a VoIP number, or an app store account set to another country. Turn off any VPN, check your app store region and use a mobile number from a supported country.

Can I use a VPN to access Claude?

Anthropic doesn’t allow it. Its help centre says only people “physically located in one of our supported locations can create and use Claude accounts”, and its terms say you can only use Claude in line with its Supported Regions Policy. Accounts that break those rules can be suspended, so a VPN is a risky workaround.

Is Claude available in Europe?

Yes. Claude.ai, the apps and the API work in every EU country, plus the UK, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland and most of the Balkans. It isn’t available in Russia or Belarus.

Is Claude available in India, Pakistan and the Philippines?

Yes. India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam are all on Anthropic’s supported list.

What does “Claude Code might not be available in your country” mean?

Claude Code shows this note alongside some sign-in errors. Claude Code follows the same supported list as Claude.ai. If you’re in a supported country, check for a VPN, proxy or company network routing your traffic abroad, then try logging in again.

Can I verify my Claude account with a phone number from another country?

Only if it’s from a supported location. Anthropic accepts numbers from supported countries only, and won’t take VoIP numbers, Google Voice, app-generated numbers or landlines. One number can verify up to three Claude accounts.

Is Claude available on Linux?
